Style Education 101

Fassina Restaurant, Fontanafredda, Italy

I contemplated this post over and over during this exact spritz. Many people ask me the famous question "How do I wear this?" Whether it be a trend or a piece in their closet. I don't have the answer for everything or everyone, but what I do have is some tips on how to help you decide how YOU wear something. This is a lot to take in, but I hope it will help a lot of you understand how to style yourself to your liking. It's a semi-long post, and I hope I'm easy to understand. I'll be touching base with the subject of "style education" more often, hopefully once a week, if not something like that. Get your notepad and pen ready :)

Proportions are the Key to Styling Success

If you have never noticed or if you have, you're one step ahead, trends and styles are mostly about proportions on the human body. A lot of fashion also revolves around the bigger picture of life and by that I mean a number of things such as, the economy or how society is "feeling" in that era. A little fashion history to help you understand what I mean by proportions...

The giant skirts of the 50's? Well they happened because there was a surplus of fabric after WWII, so naturally a designer, Christian Dior to be exact, said why not let the ladies have some beautiful full skirts. What were they paired with? A smaller more fitted top to balance out the look.

The 60's brought mini skirts, but it also brought high boots or thigh high socks to cover up some of the leg they were showing. The 70's? Maxi was was everything, from bell bottoms to dresses and skirts, but more than likely the top portion was fitted or subtly cropped.

Bring on the 80's. Big everything. High waisted everything. Shoulder pads intermixed with anything. Such a strange era, but the economy was BOOOOOOMING, so fashion and style was just a reflection of that. The power suit that Giorgio Armani designed, with a strong shoulder, unfortunately made in every color and fabric at the time, was even worn by women! What do you offset a strong shoulder with? Skinny legs of course! The skinny ankle or tapered pant was invented during the 80's.

LOLing at the 90's. Everyone went pyscho here and did whatever they wanted, high waisted Levi's from the 80's?, let's cut them into shorts! Not shower, wear plaid, stripes, leather, flannel and give a big middle finger to your parents and society, hello grunge! There are definitely elements of the 80's still creeping around.

The late 90's and 2000's are when things start to get more organized, but at the same time, strange. We start regurgitating styles from yester year. Also, not one specific style is necessary anymore to be "cool" or "in". You also have people needing to dress different body types and the need for more retailers to offer those options unlike they did before.

SO WHAT DOES SHE MEAN IN ALL OF THIS?!

Styles come and go. Trends come and go, but you always have to think of your comfort level and body type. Not all women are confident enough to wear certain things or in that same sense don't think they have the "right" body type to pull it off. WELL I'M CALLING BULLS#!T.  Everyone can be trendy. It's all about proportioning it right to your age, comfort level, body type, etc. etc.

Basic "Rules" to Play By:

  1. When wearing a smaller more fitter bottom, wear a looser top. Example: Leggings and a Tunic or Oversized Sweater (my favorite)
  2. When wearing a cropped or subtly shorter top, wear a higher waisted bottom.
  3. While wearing a low rise jean, wear a longer shirt, not necessarily looser, just longer to match the proportions
  4. Showing off a lot of leg in a skirt? Pair it with a neckline thats a bit higher instead of a deep V or plunging scoop.
  5. Afraid of wearing a trend too much? Wearing it in accessories style can show you've got style. Shoes, bags, scarves, jewelry are cheaper and smaller ways to incorporate trends without going overboard for your own style.
These are all basic things, I live by day to day. When I go out and I wanna look hot I may break a few of the rules, but my number one rule over everything?

Be confident and love the body you were given. You were only given one body. If you don't like what you see change it for the better and for yourself, not because society or someone told you to do so. Rock the clothing you want to wear. Don't be afraid to take chances and risks with fashion. The great thing about fashion is that we have mirrors and trash cans. If it didn't work for you the first time, try it with something else. Nobody is perfect. Just don't give up.
