Menswear November 2013

As many of you know, I am the wife of a military man. Therefore, most of my acquaintances in life are guys. After a few questions on why I don't do any Menswear blog posts. I've decided it was time. I probably won't be doing it very often, but I do understand that all my readers aren't always women.

The GREAT and I mean frigging fantastic thing about menswear is that trends take SO LONG to actually move through the system. This in turn means, guys can carry the same wardrobe or a majority of their pieces through a few different seasons. I can say that though, in the past years since I went to Fashion Institute of Technology, a lot has definitely changed on the "other side". Men no longer avoid shopping, they actually enjoy looking good and feeling confident in what they wear. Usually men's trends do  follow women's, but to a certain extent. Notice that as women's jeans became more and more skinny at the bottom, so did men's? As women we were taught at a young age that being a copycat is the sincerest form of flattery.

Hey Dudes, wanna know the secret to it all? L-A-Y-E-R. It makes it look like you actually give two flying... birds. You guys have the simplest pieces they all basically lay on your body the same, some tighter, some looser, but they all truly of have the same shape, which makes layering a piece of torte (italian for cake, duh). Here are a few steps to looking pulled together the easiest way possible.

Step 1: Pick Your Shirt
Burberry isn't the only one rocking plaid for the past few seasons, but for some crazy reason, plaid is 100% taking over everyone's lives. The print whether it's large, small, one-two colors or five-six colors is completely up to you. Pockets, epaulettes, different color cuffs, again all up to the person wearing it and what their style actually is.

Fitted Plaid Shirt,  Express, $69.90
Slim Fit Plaid Shirt,  Forever 21, $22.80
Plaid Flannel Long Sleeve, American Apparel, $62
BKE Colorado Springs Shirt, Buckle, $44.95

Step 2: Pick Your Under Shirt
Yes, the key to layering is that you actually have to put shirts on top of each other. It could be a simple Hanes White Tee or if you want to really look like you care, match/don't match the undershirt with the actual shirt you are wearing on top. By "match/don't match", I mean, a black tee with the bottom right hand shirt I have above, or to maybe things crazy add an orange long sleeve with the bottom left hand shirt above. It doesn't take rocket science, just trust your gut and style senses.

Seward Henley,  The North Face, $40
Rugby Striped Crew Neck Waffle Tee, Express, $49.90
Marled V-Neck Cotton Tee, Express, $34.90
 BKE V-Neck T-Shirt Buckle, $24.95

Step 3: Pick Your Bottoms
Whatever is the most comfortable or fits with your style OR goes with the occasion. The top two options are chinos (formally known as khakis) or jeans (preferably medium to dark in color). I know some mens aren't really into the whole "skinny" look and I get it completely, BUT a straighter, slimmer look that you are used to is all that I can ask. A giant baggy jean jsut isn't attractive anymore.

Never-Iron Essential Khaki, Dockers, $60
'The Greatest Pants in the Universe' Straight Leg Chinos, Toddland, $58
Slim Fit Clean Wash, Forever 21,  $17.80
BKE Jake Jean, Buckle, $66.95
514 Straight Fit, Levis, $44
Kingston Classic Fit Boot Cut, Express, $79.90

Step 5: Making it Unique
Typically, I would call this accessorize, but for guys because all outfits kind of look the same, its about making it more you. Add a belt, a watch, a hat, a scarf, a blazer, a sweater, etc.

Ribbed Knit Beenie, Forever 21, $6.80
Distressed Combat Boot, Forever 21, $34.80
Leather Belt, Michael Kors, $68
Viewfinder Digital, Diesel, $120

I hope all this helps guys!
